How This Blog Started a Business: Teach English: ESL

Students studying in Thailand.

One year ago, I started a business. It was a direct result of this blog.

While I was still teaching English in China and Thailand, I received weekly emails requesting information on how I got started teaching abroad, how I found the courage to do it and how I was liking it. These questions reminded me of my own beginning, when I was in their shoes, reaching out to perfect strangers to ask them about their experiences.

I answered every email because the kind people I questioned had answered me. I wanted to give back. But it also made me realize just how complicated and overwhelming the process can be. When one begins, she often searches Google for hours, and each new search brings up a plethora of new ideas, new options, and new worries. How do I trust these businesses? Is this a scam? Why is it so complicated?

I thought it should be easier, but I did not initially think I could be the difference. Then one day a TEFL course provider asked if I would be interested in selling its highly accredited TEFL courses. After realizing they’re one of the best in the industry, I said yes. Of course. Why not?

But I didn’t really know what I was going to do with this gift in my lap.

Then I started talking with the head of the agency I worked with in Thailand, when I went to say my goodbyes and thank yous. He mentioned in conversation something about recruitment, and a light bulb went off. Do you think I could recruit for you? I asked.

Why not? was his answer.

And thus Teach English: ESL was born.

Teach English: ESL is a full-service recruitment agency and TEFL course provider. We can equip you with the skills you’ll need to teach abroad, and then guarantee you a job. We also offer volunteer teaching positions. And we won’t drop you when you start teaching. We’re there every step of the way, with answers to every question.

I used to joke with my family and friends that I was waiting for a perfect job to fall in my lap, and I felt like it finally had. All I had to do was realize it, and run with it. Fortunately, I already had a little knowledge of site building and search engine optimization, plus a healthy database of friends in the industry.

I put together a simple site, did some minimal advertising, hung flyers up at Colorado State University where I currently study and teach, and spread the word via social media. To my surprise, emails from interested applicants started coming in, and they continue to do so with more and more frequency. I was fully prepared for this risk to fail, but now it seems I only have hope for growth.

Just keep climbing!

And growing we are. We have recently begun offering internationally accredited TEFL courses in two new, ideal locations in Thailand(Chiang Mai and Krabi), as well as Nicaragua and Costa Rica, all with highly effective job assistance. Also, we have two unique volunteer programs in Thailand, teaching English to young monks in their temple school, or primary children on the beach.

As a gift to Teach English: ESL for it’s one-year birthday, I rebranded and redesigned, courtesy of the talented, patient, knowledgeable and professional designer, Tony Kuehn (I seriously can’t say enough. If you want a custom site design, check out his site here). I am beyond pleased with the new look, and I can’t wait to show it off. I’ve also begun a new blog on the site, with articles designated solely to teaching English abroad. I invite you to visit the site, and sign up for our newsletter if you’re interested in learning more about the programs we offer, or if you simply just want to watch us continue to grow.
