  1. John says:

Home to the ” Hospitalers” or to use their alternative designation, The Knights of St John, formed as a hospital in Jarusalem for wounded from the crusades, and later granted military powers by the then Pope. Still around in many parts of the world in a similar guise, most noticeably ” St John’s Ambulance Service” in the UK. Their bitter rivals ” The Templar Knights” we’re given the option of alalgamating under them, but refused and were persecuted, imprisoned, tortured and put to death for heracy under the successive Pope. All a very clever ploy for the then King of France to grab their lands and wealth to fund the war to throw Edward of England out of the large part of France he had conquered. Scotland was the only country in Europe to grant them political asylum. Some believe that this was the reason that the poorly trained and equipped soldiers of William Wallace were successful against the might of the English army, because they had a helping hand from them. The history books however could never record it as such, because Scotland only managed to defy the order of the Pope by officially insisting that the Templar Knights, upon entering Scotland, abandoned their allegiance to it and were no longer a fighting force. Hmmm.
